It's interesting that the article points out that the single greatest challenge to the use of wind power comes from finding better storage for harnessing peak energy production. I suspect that this area will present the greatest amount of challenge and will likely result in pushing the viability of wind (and, for that matter, solar and other renewables) out a few decades while a good solution is developed.
In the meantime, to satiate our demand for energy now, it may be bet for us to focus on nuclear energy and to clear the path for more reactors to be built and brought into the North American power grid. If we keep waiting for the solution with renewables to come to fruition, we're going to continue to find ourselves depending on fossil fuels.
